The South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau under the direction of Bob Anderson has initiated a program of painting historic murals throughout the city. Evans Lumber Company has donated the space on the side of one of our warehouses for the painting of a mural of the old historic train station in South Charleston. The original warehouse still stands about 100 feet from where the train station once stood. The train station was torn down in the 1960's and few photos are in existence of the original station.
The mural is based on an original pin and ink drawing done by Don Evans as done from memory and an old newspaper picture that showed the building half torn down. The mural depicts the station and a steam locomotive as would be seen in the 1940's along with servicemen shown waiting for a train. The South Charleston station was a departure point for servicemen traveling during the war years.
Austel Miller and Mary Linderman of Artomix Company will be doing the painting of the mural. The husband and wife team have done a great deal of research to insure that all historic details are accurate in the mural. The number on the locomotive and the orginal colors of the locomotive were verified before the painting began. Artomix also did the painting on the Eagle and Flag mural on the corner of Sixth Avenue and "D" Street in downtown South Charleston.
WATCH FOR THE DEDICATION CEREMONY, JUNE 28TH AT 2:00PM. Mayor Richie Robb will dedicate the mural in a ceremony on Firday at 2:00 pm in front of the mural on D Street. Invite your friends and family and attend. |
