Dried after Treatment

After lumber is processed through the mill it is either air dried or kiln dried to remove the high moisture content. Most treated lumber is only dried once and than treated which puts moisture back into the wood, however, Cox dried-after-treatment lumber is re-dried after treatment.    Why re-dry after treatment? After lumber is prepared for treatment it is placed in a large container, similar to a pressure cooker, the chemicals used for treatment are than pumped into the treatment container and placed under pressure. The pressure ensures that the chemicals are pressed deep into the fibers of the wood. The amount of pressure and the time spent in the process determine the amount of treatment applied to the wood.    After treatment the chemicals are pumped out of the container and the lumber is removed and allowed to "drip dry", at this point most producers of "wet lumber" load the materials on trucks and ship them. They can arrive at your job-site or home still drippinng treatment chemicals. That's why sometimes the moisture comes out of the wood when you drive a nail into it. That is also why "wet lumber" is so heavy to handle.    Here is where Cox Dried after Treatment lumber is different. When the lumber is removed, it is allowed to drip-dry and then it is placed in a controlled kiln process where the moisture is removed to a moisture content of 19% or less. This process reshrinks the wood, removes excess moisture and weight and sets the chemical into the cells of the wood. When the re-dried lumber reachs your jobsite or home the chance of chemials dripping from the material is reduced to a minimum making it more environmentally sound.
