CO-OWNER L.LESLIE EVANS PASTS AWAY


South Charleston Businessman and co-owner of Evans Lumber Co., L. Leslie "Les" Evans passed away on Feb. 7, 2002, at his home following an extended illness. He was 85 years old. He was born in South Charleston on April 21, 1916, son of Walter Augustus "Gus" Evans and Pearl Newcomer Evans. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Verna Saul Evans in April of 1991: his son, James Robert "Jimmy" Evans in 1985; and a brother Everett B. Evans in 1994. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joan Leslie Evans Bissett and Larry Bissett of Morgantown; a brother ( and co-owner of Evans Lumber Co. ) Walter D. "Pat" Evans Sr. of South Charleston; and a sister, Irene Evans Reid of Valley Center in Spring Hill. Les was a graduate of South Charleston High School. He attended several years at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Aspiring to study architecture, he later enrolled at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He worked briefly at Westvaco and for the State of West Virginia before joining the family business at Evans Lumber Company. He was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church of South Charleston. He served as a city councilman for the City of South Charleston between 1962 and 1964. In 1988, he was presented and award for Outstanding Citizen of South Charleston by South Charleston Mayor Robb. He served as a trustee for the H. J. Thomas Memorial Hospital between the years of 1967 and 1972. He was also a member of Kanawha Country Club, the South Charleston Chamber of Commerce and the Elks Club. He was a charter member and director of the Chemical Bank and Trust Co. on Seventh Avenue in South Charleston.
