Mixing concrete by hand is no fun and the best way is to use a pre-mixed bag product like our fine line of Sakrete products, however, sometimes you may have the gravel and concrete on hand and you can save some money by hand mixing.
The proper mix for concrete would be 3 Parts Gravel, 2 Parts Sand and One Part Cement. Using a shovel and keeping all shovels measures the same should give you the appropriate mix. You can vary the amounts of cement for strength or the amount of sand for consistency. Mix the dry mixture throughly before adding water, a small amount at a time. If the mixture is to thin add some sand and cement to thicken.
Mixing one bag of cement by hand will cover about 12 square feet 4 inches thick. When estimating with ready mix concrete from a truck you can expect to cover 80 square feet 4 inches thick with one yard of concrete. |
